Red Lion Motorsports(RLM) is a family owned business in Flagstaff Arizona that supplies stock and aftermarket parts and accessories from 1920 classics to newer vehicles on the market. The owners Ben (father) and Shane (son), are huge fans of K&N air filters. Ben said, "K&N is also the only filter that we recommend for our customers. I started using K&N filters in 1973 on our flat track bikes. It was the only filter that could keep the dirt out. K&N has proven itself time and time again over the last 40 years. We will only use K&N on every motor that we have."

Ben and Shane have a passion for performance and have been working on project cars since 2001 and attended SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) for fourteen years. RLM has won numerous awards from their local car shows to SEMA shows, Goodguys events, Import Face-offs, Extreme Autofest events, Hot Import Nights events, and Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational to name a few.

Ben and Shane found the 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 on Craigslist, bought it and transformed it in time for the 2012 SEMA show. There are only a handful of these cars in America being that they were banned after failing crash test standards shortly after their introduction to the U.S. The cars that were already on American soil were "grandfathered" in and given a separate VIN number from the Department of Transportation which made them legal. Not only is this 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 a rare sight to see, so are finding car parts for it. Ben says "We rewired the whole car, put on a new body kit, rebuilt the engine, added new wheels and tires, and tried to keep the car as stock appearance as possible."

Red Lion Motorsports and their never ending online access to over 500,000 parts allowed them to transform the 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 right hand drive inside and out with any parts that where compatible and here are the spec's:

In the mid '70's Shane and Ben Therrien raced flat track motorcycles for Darryl Bassani in Southern California. Their passion for performance and restoration slowly grew into the conception of RedLion Motorsports. Some of their many accomplishments include a 1955 Chevy with zz4 Crate engine, 1958 Cadillac Sedan Deville, 1968 Chevelle, 1970 Nova, 1950 Dodge, 2006 Nissan 350z and a fully restored 1980 Chevy pickup.

RedLion Motorsports is currently located in Flagstaff, Arizona, and recently became a dealer for StreetGlow, Vertical Doors, Ksport, NRG Innovations, MHT Wheels, WSI Wheels and 3M products.

K&N spoke with Shane Therrien about the recent activities at RedLion Motorsports. "We are working on a 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06," said Therrien. "We already installed vertical doors on the Z06. It will soon include a supercharger, custom wheels and tires. We are also getting ready for the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada." The SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show is an automotive expo that offers an abundance of information about automotive aftermarket parts and accessories and provides a platform for displaying modified vehicles that incorporate classic and modern aftermarket technologies.

For SEMA 2010, RedLion Motorsports will be displaying their custom 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS in the StreetGlow booth. "We have made some major modifications to the Cobalt in preparation for SEMA 2010," Therrien said. "We installed a Stage 2 supercharger kit and NGK spark plugs, Vibrant polished header and 3" downpipe elim cat, prototype Bassani exhaust, MRZ performance strut bar and dress up kit, Ingalls torque damper, Cryo2 intake system with 10lb bottle and dual purge and front spray bar and a lot more."

The RedLion Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt SS is a show car, track car and a daily driver. "We take it to the local SCCA events as well as many car shows such as HIN, Speedworld, Route 66 Days, Hot Rod Power Tour, World of Wheels, Import Face-Off and more," added Therrien. "I also drive it to California, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and around town on a regular basis. We believe in driving the vehicle no matter how nice it may be."

This unique Cobalt is equipped with a K&N air intake and oil filter. "I love the way K&N has performed on our Cobalt," said Therrien. "When I got the car I upgraded to a Stage2 supercharger kit. The noise of the supercharger along with the performance was there, but it needed a little more. After I installed the K&N Typhoon air intake system, the noise from the supercharger was awesome. We had more horsepower that we could feel on the freeway. I also noticed a gain in MPG from 22 city/30 hwy to 26 city/38 hwy."

RedLion Motorsports plans to convert this '06 Chevy Cobalt from a 2.0L to 2.3L

RedLion Motorsports have been using K&N products since the late '70's on their flat track motorcycles. "We use K&N products because there is no one out there who can compete with the performance in horsepower, torque and fuel economy," Therrien said, "as well as the great product manufacturing of K&N. We have tested the product time and time again and we have not been let down by the performance of the filter."

There is hard work ahead for RedLion Motorsports in order to prepare their 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS for the 2010 SEMA show. "We are in the works with REME Designs for a custom interior and sound system," said Therrien. "We are also installing a roll cage, Garrett 40R turbo, Brian Crower stroker kit to make the 2.0L a 2.3L and a fully built bottom end. Our goal is to achieve 200mph in the car with full interior and sound system within 2010."

RedLion Motorsports continues to gain recognition in the automotive industry for their great skills and understanding of performance. "We are trying to become a one stop shop for great deals on parts and installation," concludes Therrien, "we just need to get our name out there. We will definitely be involving K&N in our future by referring all of our customers to use K&N products, as well as using them on all of RedLion Motorsports' vehicles."

The 2010 schedule for RedLion Motorsports include the following:
- 2010 SEMA Show, H.I.N. in PHX, AZ

Ben Therrien's Red Lion Motorsports is a Time Tested Automotive Parts Powerhouse

The R33 was Shane Therrien second complete restoration.
The R33 was Shane Therrien second complete restoration.
When you have toothache you go to a dentist. When automotive pain strikes because substandard parts continue to DNF your ride, you contact Red Lion Motorsports. Ben Therrien and his son Shane own RLM, which is currently a dealer for over 300 of the leading automotive companies. They can get you anything, from a radiator cap for a 1920's Ford Model T, or a K&N cold air intake for a 2012 Silverado 1500.

"We started using K&N air filters in 1973 when I was racing drag bikes," said Ben. "And it continued on through motocross, desert, speedway, and then flat track. I really noticed how the K&N air filter really kept the dirt out of the carb and that was the deciding factor for me.
Ben recently stopped by K&N headquarters to show us his rare 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 with right hand drive. He was passing through on his way to the Qualcomm Extreme Autofest Show in San Diego on July 29, 2012.

From that point on K&N has been all I use on anything we have that requires an air filter. As a retailer we do sell other air filters too, but we will only recommend K&N because they are tested and proven by RLM."

In May of this year RLM launched a membership program similar to what Costco does. Membership entitles you to a discount on over 200,000 performance parts and accessories. In the first 45 days after debuting the RLM Team membership concept it spread to seven states. "We were blown away by the success," adds Ben.

Things haven't always been peaches and roses for the Therrien's, as with any success, it requires perseverance, hard work, vision, and perhaps a little luck. Ben relocated from California to Flagstaff, Arizona to "raise our kids," as he puts it. The memories of his dad restoring classic cars drove him to open his own shop in 1991. "I built my shop and started to restore classic muscle cars and street rods. We named ourselves Red Lion Hot Rod." And for a while things went well for Ben.
Although being a retailer for many products, K&N is the only brand Ben has been recommending of over 30 years.
Although being a retailer for many products, K&N is the only brand Ben has been recommending of over 30 years.

"By 2008 the economy took a crap and we had to close the shop," reflects Ben. "We kept all our retail outlets and just did retail. My son asked me if we could do something for all his import friends. So we started being a dealer for more companies. That's when we decided to change our name to Red Lion Motorsports. By 2010 the Cobalt SS my son had been restoring was completed and we were asked to put it in the SEMA show by one of our sponsors. While at the SEMA show we were one of only 53 cars picked for the Optima Streetcar Invitational and the Cobalt got displayed on the a Speed Chanel show that ran for almost a year. We placed 28th overall, with the only front-wheel drive, 4-cylinder car competing against V8s. My son was driving and that event put RLM on the map."
The Cobalt SS was Shane's first complete restore and the car they say got the ball rolling for RLM.
The Cobalt SS was Shane's first complete restore and the car they say got the ball rolling for RLM.

For Shane's next restoration project he found a 1995 Nissan Skyline R33 that had just crashed into a wall at a drift car event and the owner was tired of fixing it. "We got the car home and started learning all about Skylines," explains Ben. "Come to find out there are no body parts made for this car, whatever you can find is all used. The body kit came from Japan, the taillights from Madagascar, the taillight bezels from New Zealand."

The deeper they got into it, the more they realized just how rare the R33 truly is. When the R33s were first imported into the U.S. they failed government crash test standards and they were banned. The cars that were already on American soil were "grandfathered" in and given a separate VIN number from the Department of Transportation which made them legal.

"We keep hearing that there is somewhere between five to 37 of these in the U.S." says Ben "It's been hard trying to confirm this, but every show that we do with this car, everyone that knows what this car is asks us how we got it in the U.S. legally."
It all first started in 1991 for Ben with Red Lion Hot Rod and dazzling restoration work such as this sweet ride.

In January Optima contacted the Therriens, asking if they'd be interested in putting a car on display in their booth for a presentation in the corporate headquarters of Pep Boys in Los Angeles. "We brought the Cobalt all lettered in Pep Boys logos," said Ben. "While at the event we told the Optima reps about our Skyline R33."

"The L.A. event had a good turnout that they asked us if we wanted to do some NHRA events and again put the Cobalt on display. We said yes, but I think the R33 would bring a bigger crowd to your booth."

Ben's automotive instincts were once again spot on, as the Optima booth at the NHRA event in Phoenix, Arizona was blitzed with people looking to photograph the elusive R33.

"Optima called us that night to see if we were interested in doing 16 more NHRA events," said Ben "We said yes again, but were still waiting on that. We are also hoping to get the Skyline in this year's SEMA show and Optima Challenge."

Red Lion Motorsports' Passion for Racing Stems Far Beyond Aftermarket Performance Parts

Red Lion Motorsports sponsors two NASA series cars including a 2006 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V and a 2000 Integra Type-R.

Many of those into building cars are likely already aware that Red Lion Motorsports offers an astronomical number of aftermarket performance parts for an array of makes and models. In fact, they are a dealer for an excess of 375 manufacturers and over 500,000 parts and accessories.

Although a provider of parts and accessories, the company's passion for the sport of racing goes much deeper. In fact, according to owner, Ben Therrien, they sponsor several vehicles in the world of racing, an endeavor embarked upon in 2006.

The 1980 Camaro they sponsor, is equipped with a small block engine. The motor sports a Holly 950 carburetor sitting atop a Procomp intake. Designed to handle the horsepower, a TH-400 transmission is bolted to the bell-housing, and the back wheels are secured to a ten-bolt rear end.

Driven by Brandon Wyatt, the offspring of the father/son Wyatt Racing team, the vehicle's best E.T. (Elapsed Time) is 11.40 at 117 miles per-hour. Having been sponsored by Red Lion for two years the team has seen their share of success, In fact they finished second at the Hangover Nationals and finished ninth overall in the American Dragcar series.

Red Lion also sponsors two NASA series cars. They took a 2006 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, driven by Westly Benett, under their wing two years ago. The modifications made to this particular vehicle are extensive, to say the least. Improvements have been made under the hood and throughout the drive train. The steering and braking systems have seen modifications as have the wheels, tires, and suspension.
Red Lion Motorsports also has an interest in cycles, and in turn sponsors this 2003 Honda CBR 600-RR.
Red Lion Motorsports also has an interest in cycles, and in turn sponsors this 2003 Honda CBR 600-RR.

They have been sponsoring the second NASA series car, manned by Ian Gill, for four years. Although fewer modifications have been made to this particular race car, some essential changes have been made. In fact, the stock engine was replaced with a built/balanced LS/VTECH motor, while Prothane sway-bar bushings and Blox sway-bar end links were added to the mix. Plans for this season are to run the 2000 Integra Type R in the Time Attack events and the Honda Tuning Magazine R Challenge.

Red Lion also has an interest in motorcycle racing as well. They have been sponsoring a 2003 Honda CBR 600 RR, ridden by John Stillon for three years. The bike sports a few modifications, including a Zero Gravity Double-Bubble windscreen, a 520 chain and sprocket Double H brakes on the front and rear, a two Brothers racing exhaust with midpipe and custom paint. The crew also saw the importance of installing a K&N air filter.

"There isn't one vehicle in particular that we enjoy sponsoring most," explained Therrien. We enjoy all of them. They each bring something different to the events they attend."

Referring to sponsoring multiple vehicles he continued, "We actually have only one person who oversees all of the teams. We are working on building an open-road racing team as well. The members of our teams are very important to us. They help promote Red Lion Motorsports with their public relations work and vehicle presence."

Ben Therrien and Red Lion Motorsports are confident that success awaits those who adhere to hard work, and good tuning, as well as have an awareness of the importance of good luck. But the crew is also an advocate of proper maintenance.

"If you don't perform maintenance, you're just asking for trouble," explained Therrien. "This is a serious matter with us. While racing vehicles, you have the possibility of serious injury or even death over something that could be caught in regular maintenance."

The owner and his affiliates are also perfectly aware that maintenance plays a huge role in one's overall success. That in mind, Red Lion Motorsports depends on K&N products to keep the internal components of their engines running clean.

"We've been using K&N products since 1973," he stated. All of our vehicles use their air and oil filters." Sharing his thoughts on K&N products, the owner said, "There is nothing better in the industry. We have tested and proven their products on the track and will use nothing else. We also recommend only K&N products to our customers."

Red Lion Motorsports is no different from any other entity involved in racing in the fact that they savor victories. When asked their hopes for the upcoming season of the sport, Ben Therrien answered, "This year we are shooting for top-ten positions in each devision, but taking a championship is not out of the question."
